Building a High-Performance 10G Home Lab & Business Gateway
Overview

In the era of 2G+ Fiber optics and 8K video production, traditional Gigabit (1G) and even 2.5G networks have become bottlenecks for power users, creative studios, and SMBs. Users require a hardware solution that balances high-speed throughput, low power consumption, and industrial-grade reliability.

The Challenge

A boutique creative agency needed a centralized network core that could:

  • Handle a 2.5Gbps external ISP connection.
  • Provide a 10Gbps (10G) backbone for a NAS (Network Attached Storage) to allow real-time 4K video editing.
  • Run multiple virtualized services (Firewall, VPN, and Home Automation) 24/7 without noise.
  • Operate in a non-server room environment (on a desk or in a closet) without overheating.
The Solution: Kettop-Mi305H6

We deployed the Kettop-Mi305H6 powered by the Intel® Core™ i3-N305 (8-core) processor, featuring its unique networking layout.

  • Networking Power: Utilized the Dual 10GbE (SFP+ or RJ45) ports for the high-speed internal backbone and the Quad 2.5GbE (Intel i226-V) ports for WAN and peripheral devices.
  • Virtualization Ready: Equipped with 32GB DDR5 memory and NVMe SSD storage to run Proxmox VE.
  • Silent Efficiency: The fanless, solid aluminum chassis acted as a massive heatsink, ensuring 0dB operation while maintaining stable temperatures under load.
Implementation Results
  • Massive Throughput: Achieved full wire-speed 10Gbps transfers between the workstation and the NAS, reducing file backup times by 90%.
  • All-in-One Convergence: Successfully consolidated a separate router, a VPN gateway, and a Docker server into a single 15W idle-power device.
  • Industrial Stability: The rugged, fanless design eliminated the risk of mechanical fan failure, ensuring 99.9% uptime for critical office services.
